What you'll Learn

Training Science and Mechanics
The foundation of effective dog training, focusing on learning theory, training mechanics, timing, reinforcement, motivation, markers, criteria, and communication. Learn not only what to teach, but how and why dogs learn, developing the technical skills needed to create clear, consistent, and reliable behavior.

Companion Dog Training & Behavior
This module focuses on the practical skills needed to train companion dogs and address common behavior challenges. Apprentices learn foundational obedience, puppy development, leash skills, impulse control, behavior modification, and effective strategies for addressing issues such as reactivity, fear, and anxiety.

Professional Instruction & Client Communication
This module develops the communication and teaching skills essential to working with dog owners. Apprentices learn how to conduct lessons, explain training concepts, demonstrate techniques, develop training plans, and effectively coach clients to maintain their dog’s progress at home.

Canine Care & Facility Operations
The professional standards required to safely and responsibly care for dogs in a training facility. Apprentices learn kennel management, feeding, sanitation, exercise, enrichment, health and safety procedures, equipment care, and daily facility operations while developing the attention to detail and accountability essential to professional dog care.

Working Dogs, Sports, & Specialized Skills
The advanced applications of dog training through working dogs, canine sports, and specialized training. Apprentices gain hands-on experience with areas such as tracking, scent detection, protection, competition obedience, and other performance disciplines while developing the skills to understand and train dogs for specific working and sport-related goals.
The Airborne K9 Apprenticeship is designed to provide a potential pathway to employment for apprentices who demonstrate exceptional skill, professionalism, and commitment to our standards. As apprentices progress through the program, they will take on increasing responsibility and be evaluated on their ability to work independently, train dogs effectively, and communicate with clients. Successful graduates may be considered for available positions with Airborne K9 as Junior Trainers or Professional Trainers.

Stage 1
Apprentice
The Apprentice stage introduces students to the fundamentals of professional dog training. Apprentices observe experienced trainers, develop hands-on handling skills, study core training concepts, and begin working with dogs under direct supervision.

Stage 2
Advanced Apprenticeship
At this stage, apprentices begin taking on greater responsibility and applying their knowledge in real training environments. They work with dogs more independently, assist with client lessons, and demonstrate competency in foundational training, communication, and professional standards.

Trainer Candidate
Trainer Candidates have demonstrated a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skill and are transitioning toward independent professional work. They take increased responsibility for training cases, participate in client instruction, develop training plans, and are evaluated on their ability to consistently meet Airborne K9's standards.
