About
**Beginning Heel: Building Position and Engagement** In this lesson, we're introducing heel for the very first time. At this stage, our goal isn't precision—it's helping the dog discover that staying near our left side and moving with us is rewarding. Using food rewards and clear marker timing, we'll encourage the dog into the heel position, reinforce voluntary engagement, and begin creating value for staying close as we move. Keep your sessions short, upbeat, and successful. Don't worry about perfect head position, straight sits, or sustained focus just yet. Those details come later. Remember that heel is more than just walking beside you—it's a conversation between you and your dog. Right now, we're simply teaching the language. Focus on building confidence, enthusiasm, and a positive association with the position. A dog that enjoys heelwork from the beginning will be much easier to develop into a precise, attentive partner as training progresses.
